Median rent and median income
Measured against the median weekly income of all households, renters or not, the median rent in the Gold Coast council area equalled 27%, against 22% across Queensland. That share is worked out on this page from two medians rather than drawn from the Census, and it is not what renters themselves pay. Household income stood at $1,691 a week, against the state's $1,675, so the higher share traces to the higher rent rather than to lower earnings.
Townhouses and apartments took a larger share
Home to 625,087 people at the 2021 Census, the Gold Coast council area leaned away from the separate house. Only 57% of occupied homes were separate houses, against 75% across Queensland, while townhouses, terraces or semi-detached houses reached 21% and flats and apartments 22%, each against 12% statewide. Fewer bedrooms too: 27% had two bedrooms or fewer, against 22% across the state.
